LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM - NILGA WELCOMES ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STCs

On Monday 1st July 2013, the Assembly affirmed the 11 Statutory Transition Committees (STCs) to be put in place by the existing 26 councils to drive forward the preparations for the new local authorities expected to emerge in April 2015. The STCs will have responsibility for leading convergence between merging councils and undertaking preparatory work for the 11 new Councils, including planning new ways to engage local people through community planning and designing corporate and strategic foundations for the successor organisations.

PLANNING BILL AMENDMENTS - CONSTRUCTIVE DIALOGUE URGENTLY NEEDED

LAUNCH OF 2013 TRANSLINK ULSTER IN BLOOM COMPETITION

The 2013 Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition was officially launched today (June 20) and this year judges will be paying particular attention to efforts to support Northern Ireland’s rich biodiversity. The 35th year of the annual horticultural competition has attracted 145 entries representing councils, community groups, businesses, bus and rail stations all preparing to impress judges with beautiful plant and floral presentations.

REFORM - MINISTER’S STATEMENT ON TRANSFER OF FUNCTIONS GIVES SOME CERTAINTY & ENCOURAGEMENT

The Northern Ireland Local Government Association, NILGA, was encouraged by Minister Attwood’s announcement that the Executive has agreed the key elements of service and budget transfers to councils (22/04/2013). This is a clear step forward in the Council Reform process and opens debate for a wider, whole system, review of public administration and representation, of which councils are a small part.

The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) staged a key regional event in Belfast, on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th April 2013. Attended by representatives from over 20 European States, the convention was co-ordinated by the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA) and hosted by Belfast City Council.

Amidst a backdrop of cold harsh weather more fitting for the depths of winter, representatives from local councils, businesses, community groups, bus and rail stations all gathered to celebrate last year’s outstanding gardening achievements.
