NILGA, in partnership with the Local Government Training Group, is hosting an upcoming online planning training event for all elected members.
The Condensed Planning Programme for Councillors 2020, will be held virtually on Zoom on Tuesday 18 August, it is part of an ongoing programme of training for elected members on the planning system in Northern Ireland which aims to improve understanding and confidence in planning decisions. This session welcomes participation from all elected members seeking to improve their understanding of the planning system.
The session will focus on key issues including:
The half-day session, from 10:30 – 15:30, will leave councillors more confident in their planning decisions, expand on the importance and breadth of council planning powers and how to effectively use them for the benefit of local areas and communities, and ensuring councils are targeting resources in the most impactful way.

With the likely impact of Covid-19 on how we design our cities, towns, and villages, planning has come back into sharp focus. This training event will be a timely and valuable session which will educate councillors on everything from their role in plan making and place shaping, development management, and legal issues like the Statutory Appeals system and engaging with the Ombudsman and Judicial Review.”
